Design and Build
The Hollyland Lark M2 is tiny, shockingly tiny. The microphone is shaped like a button, making it easy to clip onto any clothing using its magnetic attachment. it weights a ridiculous 9 grams, light enough that you won’t feel it tugging on your clothes, unlike some bulkier wireless mics from the competitors. The kit comes with several accessories, lanyards, magnets, and a charging case to keep everything in place while you use it.
The charging case itself is very convenient. It can charge all components twice from flat before needing a recharge, so you’re covered for a full day of shooting. The receiver that connects to your camera or smartphone is also small, with a large volume knob for easy sound adjustments. Easy to use.
Setup and Ease of Use
The Hollyland Lark M2 is designed to be plug-and-play. The transmitters and receiver are already paired right out of the box, so setup is a breeze and it will get you going in no time. All you have to do is connect the receiver to your camera or smartphone, clip on the mic, and you’re ready to start recording good audio. It is as simple as that. Whether you’re using it with a camera or smartphone, the process is so easy anyone can do it without the need osf any technical knowledge.
The LarkSound app is also a nice touch, allowing you to adjust volume levels and noise cancellation. The app works on both Android and iOS, giving you the ability to control any settings without having to fiddle with the mic itself. This is handy if you have the microphone on anyone other than yourself and you want to make any adjustments without having to invade the person’s space. I find this really handy. You can also use the app to check the battery life and monitor audio levels, which is brilliant tto make sure your audio levels are always right.
Audio Quality and Performance
Getting good and reliable audio quality is the most important aspect of any microphone, and the Lark M2 doesn’t disappoint. The mic records sound in 48kHz/24-bit quality, which means that you clear, crisp audio. It has a noise-cancellation feature that blocks out background noise, making it ideal for outdoor filming or noisy environments. Personally I prefer to do any noise cancellation in post, for more control, but if you need to go straight to social media, this can be a very helpful feature.
When we tested the Lark M2 in real-world conditions, we noticed that it performed well, even when we had the mic far from the speaker. The audio remained clear, even when we placed one mic a bit lower down the shirt. The Lark M2 kept a good sound quality without any noticeable drop in volume or clarity. That was a pleasant surprise.
Range and Connectivity
Hollyland claims the Lark M2 has a range of up to 300 meters, or about 1,000 feet. While this sounds impressive, in our real-world test we noticed that it’s best to stay within 200 feet (60m) to get a consistent audio signal without dropouts. The given range is probably on lab test conditions without any obstruction, but in situations where obstacles are present, like walls or people, the range will definitely drop. If you go beyond 130 feet (39m) with obstructions, there’s a good chance the signal will start cutting out. You can’t expect miracles, let’s be honest. So, while it can technically reach 300 meters, it’s best used within a shorter range, especially in areas with potential interference, city or residential areas. If you are in a park with tress and other foliage, the range is even less.
Battery Life and Charging
Battery life is one of the Lark M2’s strong points. Each mic can last for up to an amazing 10 hours on a full charge, which is more than enough for a full filming day. on top of that, the charging case can recharge the entire set twice from flat, so you have enough battery, even if you’re out filming all day.
The full system charges in about 1.5 hours, and this is really helpful, as you can easily use a power bank in between locations or during lunch breaks or between sessions. The mics also have LED indicators that show the battery status, making it easy to check if you need a recharge.
Accessories and Additional Features
The Lark M2 Combo Kit includes all the necessary accessories to make sound recording and easy process. It comes standard with two transmitters, a receiver, a charging case, magnetic clips, lanyards, and windshields for outdoor recording. There’s even a sheet of fun stickers to customize the look of your mics.
For those who need even more control, the LarkSound app allows you to adjust volume levels, settings, update firmware, and change the noise-canceling strength. The volume dial on the receiver itself lets you adjust sound directly from the camera for a quick operation, which is a very handy feature for adjusting levels on the fly and without hassle
