If you’re setting up a YouTube studio, lighting is key to making your videos look professional. Good lighting can take your setup from basic to brilliant, and it’s not just about having fancy cameras. In this Youtube Studio Lighting Tutorial, I’ll show you how I light my studio and give you some practical tips on how to achieve clean, professional-looking lighting for your videos. Why Lighting Matters in Video Production

Lighting is one of the most important aspects of video production. Without proper lighting, even the best camera can produce flat, dull, or poorly exposed footage. It’s all about creating depth, eliminating shadows, and directing focus where you want it. You don’t need to break the bank to get good lighting, but investing in the right gear will make a big difference.

Main Lighting Setup

My go-to light for studio lighting is the Zhiyun G200 Light. This light is incredibly powerful, running up to 200 watts, and it’s compact compared to other lights in its class. One of the best features is its CRI rating of 95%, which ensures the light is color-accurate. This means you’ll get consistent lighting whether you’re adjusting the brightness from 1% to 100%. It’s also bi-color, so you can switch between tungsten and daylight settings with ease.

For the main light, I use a 90D parabolic softbox with a honeycomb grid. The softbox helps soften the light, while the grid prevents light from spilling all over the room, keeping it focused on me. The setup is super easy, and everything is mounted using autopoles, so I don’t have stands taking up space on the floor.

Backlighting and Rim Lighting

Rim lighting adds depth and separates you from the background. For this, I use the Zhiyun M20C, which is mounted on a  super clamp and positioned to light up my shoulders and the side of my face. The barndoors on the M20C help direct the light, preventing it from spilling all over the place. This makes it easier to control where the light hits, ensuring that I get a nice, crisp outline around me.

I also add a fill light using a basic 1×1 ft LED panel, which softens the shadows created by the main light. This creates a balanced look without overexposing the background.

Controlling Lights with the Zhiyun App

One of the things that makes my setup so efficient is the ability to control all of my lights through the Zhiyun app. Instead of walking around to adjust each light, I can manage brightness, color temperature, and even turn the lights on and off right from my phone. This saves time and ensures I get consistent settings every time I shoot.

Additional Tips for Better Lighting

• Use softboxes: Softboxes diffuse harsh light and give your videos a professional, flattering look.
• Control light spill: Using grids and barndoors helps keep the light focused on you rather than lighting up the entire room.
• Always block out natural light: Windows can cause inconsistent lighting, so use blackout curtains or blinds to have complete control over your lighting.

On Location Lighting with the Zhiyun X100

For creators who shoot outside the studio, the Zhiyun X100 is a fantastic portable light. It’s small, lightweight, and runs on batteries, making it ideal for location shoots. It has a 100-watt output, and despite its size, it provides excellent light quality. I’ve used it for everything from overhead photography to quick interviews, and it’s proven to be reliable.

The battery lasts around an hour at full power, or 3 to 4 hours if you’re using it at lower settings. It also comes with its own set of lighting modifiers, including a mini softbox, which makes it even more versatile.
